The anticipation and excitement was clear from the moment the teams arrived, with our wonderful Churchill families filling the sidelines to support us in our opening Herald Cup game of the season.

We quickly warmed up and we were ready for the battle ahead. Freddie proudly wore the captain’s armband for our first game of the season, leading the team out as we looked to get our Herald Cup campaign off to a strong start.

We started brilliantly, driving at the Stella Maris defence and putting them under pressure from the very beginning. Harley, Leon and Josh worked tirelessly to press high up the pitch, consistently winning the ball in dangerous areas. It wasn’t long before Leon found the back of the net to put Churchill 1–0 up.

We continued to apply pressure, while Toby and Henry worked extremely hard at the back to keep things tight and ensure very little got through to Louie in goal. They defended brilliantly and used long balls forward to launch constant counter-attacks.

Freddie was outstanding in the middle of the park, showing great skill and flair to take players on and maintain possession, while also working hard to win the ball back and fulfil his defensive duties.

Stella Maris created an opportunity through the middle, but Louie produced a brilliant save to keep them at bay. Unfortunately, the follow-up shot took an unlucky deflection and found its way into our net to make it 1–1.

We made some changes to freshen things up, and Casey immediately made an impact on the left, driving at his defender and putting them under pressure. Jack stuck to his player like glue, making sure the ball couldn't reach them, while also showing great composure when playing the ball out from the back. Franky positioned himself brilliantly, linking up well with the wingers and helping us maintain our attacking threat.

Half-time arrived with the score level at 1–1, but we felt we were on top. The message was simple: stay calm, keep working together and continue to play our football.

We came out for the second half ready for the battle. Harley continued to drive the team forward, playing some excellent passes to create opportunities, although we couldn't quite find the finish.

Then came a moment of real quality. A cross came in from the right and Leon timed his run perfectly, getting a glancing touch that nestled into the back of the net. 2–1 Churchill! It was a brilliant finish - even Leon looked a little surprised by how it had gone in!

We continued to press whenever Stella Maris had a goal kick, with the whole team communicating brilliantly to win the ball high up the pitch and put the pressure straight back on their defence.

Louie was excellent whenever called upon, although his workload was limited thanks to the outstanding defending of Jack, Toby and Henry. Even as we made further changes, the intensity and teamwork remained exactly the same.

Leon, Josh and Casey worked brilliantly to maintain our width, finding space and then driving at the Stella Maris backline. We also had a flurry of corners, and this was where our preparation really paid off. We had discussed our tactics before the game and even practised them at lunchtime — and it was certainly worth it!

The runs were timed perfectly, the ball was delivered expertly by Freddie and Leon was there, ready to pounce. 3–1 Churchill! A superb hat-trick for Leon, with every finish different, but his impact went far beyond his goals. His constant pressure and work rate made a huge difference throughout the game.

The final stages saw us continue to control the match. Everyone was having a go from distance, searching for that perfect combination of power and dip, while the team continued to make the extra pass and work for one another rather than themselves.

It was a fantastic team performance, built on Togetherness, Resilience and Adaptability. Every player contributed, every change made an impact and the whole team worked tirelessly for each other.

A superb hat-trick from Leon topped off an excellent performance as we finished our opening Herald Cup game as 3–1 winners.

A brilliant start to our campaign and a result that reflected the effort, teamwork and determination shown by everyone.
