Final Score: The Churchill School 4-3 Seabrook

After the downpours earlier in the day and with the smell of freshly cut grass in the air, we were ready to ramp up our preparations ahead of the start of the Herald Cup. Seabrook kindly agreed to a friendly fixture and we were delighted to welcome them to Churchill for an afternoon of football.

We had a big squad available, allowing everyone to get plenty of game time. Toby proudly wore the captain's armband and, after leading the team through a focused warm-up, we were ready to go.

With the Herald Cup rules changing this season, we are now playing 7-a-side, so we set up in a 2–3–1 formation.

Seabrook started brightly, enjoying plenty of possession as we initially struggled to get hold of the ball. However, when we did win it, we passed confidently and looked to drive forward. Leon and Josh worked hard to put some dangerous balls into the Seabrook box, and we enjoyed a flurry of corners, but we couldn't quite find the finish we needed.

Seabrook then broke down the left and, despite our best efforts, we couldn't prevent them from finding the back of the net with a neat finish to make it 1–0.

But this Churchill team doesn't give up.

The boys picked themselves up and kept fighting. Franky forced the Seabrook goalkeeper into a fantastic double save as we searched for an equaliser. It felt like it was only a matter of time, but the Seabrook defence and goalkeeper were excellent, producing some brilliant tackles and saves to keep us at bay.

Halfway through the first half, we made a number of changes to ensure everyone had a fair share of the action. Harlow came into midfield and immediately helped drive us forward, working hard alongside Harley. Their efforts paid off as Harlow produced a lovely dribble and finish to bring us level at 1–1.

Toby and Henry worked tirelessly at the back, making relentless challenges and dealing extremely well with Seabrook's tricky forward. Austin came on and continued that excellent defensive work, producing an amazing slide tackle to win the ball — and then somehow managing to pass it while still on the floor!

The whole team continued to work together and kept knocking on the Seabrook door, desperate to find a second. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be. Seabrook found another opening and scored their second of the afternoon.

We came in for a chat, highlighted Seabrook's strengths and made some adjustments to the way we were playing before heading back out.

It didn't take long for the changes to have an impact.

Josh found himself in acres of space and drove forward, creating a 2-on-1 with Leon. After some neat passing between the two, Josh calmly tucked the ball away with the goalkeeper staring him down.

2–2 — game on!

Jack worked incredibly hard in midfield, consistently winning the ball high up the pitch and putting the Seabrook back line under pressure.

Leon and Josh linked up beautifully again, with Leon producing a brilliant back heel pass to put Josh through on goal. Nobody watching thought he would miss — and he didn't! Josh buried the chance to put Churchill ahead 3–2. He was outstanding throughout the afternoon and particularly clinical when his chances came.

At the other end, Toby and Henry continued to stick to their task, marking Seabrook's striker out of the game and making challenge after challenge to prevent him from getting through on goal.

Louie was also superb throughout the game and a real rock at the back. He made a crucial save, punching the ball away and allowing us to quickly turn defence into attack. His goal kicks and throws repeatedly put Seabrook under pressure, finding our speedy wingers and allowing them to run at the Seabrook defence.

Halfway through the second half, we made another round of changes.

Austin and Casey linked up brilliantly, with Austin repeatedly putting Casey through and Casey driving directly at the Seabrook defence. After a handful of attempts, it felt like it was only a matter of time before he found the back of the net.

Parker was also working tirelessly out on the right. Whenever he found space, he drove at Seabrook and delivered some dangerous crosses which, unfortunately, just couldn't quite find a Churchill player.

Then came the moment.

As we played out from the back, the ball found Harlow, who played a perfectly weighted pass out to Casey. Casey twisted and turned to lose his defender before calmly finishing to make it 4–2.

Mum and Dad on the sideline were smiling just as much as Casey was!

It was a goal that was thoroughly deserved.

Harley continued to work incredibly hard, pushing us forward and linking well with Parker to press the Seabrook defenders and win the ball high up the pitch time and time again.

Late in the game, a tussle and coming together in the box resulted in a Seabrook penalty. They converted from the spot to make it 4–3, setting up a nervy finish.

But the final whistle soon followed.

The boys were superb - not just in the way they played, but in the way they supported one another, worked as a team and showed respect to the opposition.

It was a fantastic game for everyone to watch, with brilliant support from both schools on the sidelines.

A huge thank you to Seabrook for travelling to Churchill and agreeing to the fixture. We wish them the very best of luck in the Herald Cup this season.

For us, it was exactly what we needed: valuable game time, plenty of lessons learnt and a brilliant afternoon of football.
