The sun broke through just in time for kick-off, bringing some welcome warmth as Churchill Girls prepared for their quarter-final clash with local rivals Sandgate. The stakes were high - victory would not only secure a place in the semi-finals, but also make this the most successful Churchill girls team in school history.
From the first whistle, Churchill looked determined, motivated, and ready for the challenge.
The game burst into life early when Jaycee picked up the ball just outside the Sandgate box. Showing brilliant skill to beat her defenders, she smashed home a powerful finish to make it 1–0 and settle any early nerves.
Churchill continued to dominate, with Kiesza and Freya linking up superbly through midfield. Their sharp dribbling and movement created the second goal, as Freya drove a brilliant shot into the back of the net.
Esmee then produced a moment of magic, surging from defence into attack before striking from distance and watching the ball sail over the goalkeeper and into the goal.
At the back, Evie, Manda, and Esmee were outstanding, keeping Sandgate pinned in their own half with composed defending and excellent distribution into midfield.
Jaycee was hungry for more and looked dangerous every time Churchill attacked, constantly sniffing out opportunities. Lexie also made a huge impact, delivering dangerous passes and crosses into the box that kept Sandgate under relentless pressure.
Just before half-time, Esmee grabbed her second in spectacular style, smashing an effort that bounced off the woodwork before burying itself in the net to send Churchill into the break firmly in control.
Churchill started the second half just as strongly. Freya, Jaycee, and Lexie combined beautifully, creating fluid passing moves that stretched Sandgate all over the pitch.
Lexie soon got on the scoresheet after more dangerous attacking play, before Jaycee completed a well-deserved hat-trick thanks to her sharp positioning, awareness, and clinical finishing.
Freya added her second of the day after more excellent link-up play, while Lexie went on to secure two further goals before the final whistle, her movement and positioning making her a constant threat.
Sandgate managed a late consolation goal on the break, but Churchill’s dominance was never in question.
Manda and Evie continued to push higher up the pitch, consistently winning the ball back, while Lilly remained calm and assured in goal, making several excellent saves and closing down the opposition brilliantly to limit Sandgate to just one goal.
A sensational performance, a place in the semi-finals, and history made - this Churchill girls team are officially the most successful girls team in school history.
