Match Report: Sandgate vs The Churchill School
Final Score: Sandgate 1 – 1 The Churchill School
Due to our pitch being unplayable, this week’s fixture was played away at Sandgate. The match took place on a lovely pitch with a viewing area on a hill where spectators gathered to watch.
Sandgate is traditionally a team we have struggled to get results against, so the boys knew they were in for a tough game. Determined to bounce back after last week’s fixture, Churchill started brightly and got straight down to business.
Playing with confidence, the ball moved well across the pitch. Hudson was pinging long passes from the back, with Finley making great runs to latch onto them and provide a real attacking threat. Finley delivered several dangerous balls into the box, but unfortunately no one was quite able to get the finishing touch.
Sandgate created a few chances of their own, but Leon, Freddie O, Leo and Harry dealt with them confidently, not allowing their forwards to settle into the game. Behind them, Hudson produced some incredible saves, flying like a salmon to keep the scores level and giving the team confidence that he had everything covered.
In midfield, Ronnie and Freddie W worked tirelessly to progress the ball, looking to play Finley and Ellis in behind the defence. After a hard-fought first half, both teams went into the break at 0–0, satisfied with their efforts.
Churchill came out for the second half with their heads held high, believing they were right in the game and just needed to take their chances.
Early in the second half, a brilliant ball was played through to Austin, who had only just come onto the pitch. He strode forward before striking the ball superbly. It looked like it might loop over the goal, but instead it hit the crossbar and dropped perfectly into the corner of the net. The celebrations were instant - players screaming and running back in delight. Even the referee couldn’t help but smile and congratulate him. No one was more impressed than his mum, who could definitely be heard cheering all the way from Hawkinge!
The goal filled the boys with belief and they battled for every 50/50 challenge, determined to hold onto the lead. Jacob came on the left side of defence and showed great composure playing out from the back, feeding the ball into Toby, who was making his debut and battled brilliantly, not giving their midfield any time on the ball.
Harry was superb at the back, clearing the ball time and time again to stop Sandgate building attacks. However, with around 10 minutes remaining, Sandgate won a corner. A flick-on from the delivery found its way into the bottom corner to make it 1–1.
Sandgate sensed the momentum and pushed forward, running at the back line repeatedly, but Churchill defended bravely. The team dropped deeper in an effort to secure the point, clearing the ball under constant pressure. It was a tense finish and you could sense the crowd had their hearts in their mouths as the boys needed every bit of support they could get.
Sandgate continued to push players forward in search of a late winner, but Hudson was outstanding in goal. During the closing stages he made several excellent saves to keep us in the game, calmly collecting the ball and confidently coming out to meet it at the edge of his box as players bundled forward looking for that final chance.
Austin and Finley continued to provide great outlets up front, with Ronnie consistently finding them to stretch play and search for a late winner. Despite their efforts, the decisive goal never came.
In the end, 1–1 was a very strong result. Sandgate is a team we have historically found difficult to get results against, and coming away from a tough venue with a point shows just how hard the boys worked and how much they have grown as a team. Every player battled for one another and defended with determination right until the final whistle.
The players were ecstatic with the result and left the pitch beaming with pride - as did the coaching staff. Against a very good Sandgate side, this was a performance full of effort, resilience and belief, and one the boys should be extremely proud of.
