Match Report: The Churchill School vs Cheriton Primary
Final Score: The Churchill School 0-0 Cheriton Primary
The sun was shining as we welcomed Cheriton Primary to Churchill, and after a day of sunshine, the pitch had dried out nicely and was looking ready for another big game.
We warmed up efficiently before having a long chat about how we wanted to approach the game and the changes we were making to our tactics. We knew exactly what we were up against. Cheriton are a very tough side who beat us 6–1 last year, so we knew we would have to battle, dig deep and work incredibly hard as a team if we were going to get a result.
We were determined to make this a much harder fixture for them this time around.
And that is exactly what we did.
From kick-off, we pressed Cheriton but also remained compact when we needed to, reducing the space available to them and looking to win the ball back before quickly springing our own attacks.
Freddie was superb at winning the ball and driving us forward. He powered up the right flank, leaving his defender in his dust, before delivering a fantastic cross into the box. Casey connected perfectly with it, sending the ball crashing against the top of the crossbar before it bounced down and somehow stayed out! It was an excellent piece of play and so close to giving us the lead.
Casey and Josh worked tirelessly, running up and down the wings to drive us forward. They looked dangerous whenever we attacked but were equally willing to drop back and help defensively, making sure Cheriton never had time or space on the ball without being put under pressure.
At the back, Toby and Henry were outstanding. They dealt with everything Cheriton threw at them, clearing the ball, dribbling forward to help us build attacks and making some excellent tackles. Whether it was Toby stepping in front of his man to win the ball or Henry timing a sliding tackle perfectly, they were giving Cheriton attackers absolutely nothing to work with.
We felt like we were constantly on top, driving at Cheriton and making it difficult for them to settle into the game.
Then came another great attacking opportunity. We won the ball and quickly moved forward, with Freddie playing a perfect line-breaking pass between two Cheriton defenders and into the path of Franky. Franky drove towards goal and managed to get his shot away, but it flew narrowly wide.
At the other end, Louie was as calm as ever in goal. He came out confidently to claim crosses, went to ground to collect the ball and constantly communicated with his defence, helping to keep everyone calm and organised. Another super performance from Louie.
Jack came on and picked up exactly where Henry had left off, making life extremely difficult for the Cheriton attackers and refusing to give them an inch of space.
Half-time arrived with the boys tired but knowing that we were right in the game. We spoke about our key principles and reminded the players that we needed to keep working hard. We were doing everything we had discussed, and Cheriton were clearly struggling to deal with the pressure we were putting them under.
We went back out ready to fight and defend our home. We were not going to make this easy for them.
The second half continued in much the same way.
We continued to sit off at the right moments before pouncing and pressing when the opportunity presented itself. The boys had clearly understood the tactics, and we were turning over possession again and again.
Franky and Freddie were excellent at winning the ball back and immediately springing attacks, while Josh and Casey continued to work tirelessly, constantly driving at the Cheriton defence and putting dangerous balls into the box. Their attacking play was beginning to make the Cheriton back line look increasingly uncomfortable, and we knew we could exploit that.
Josh had barely stopped running all game and eventually needed a well-deserved break. Jack stepped in at right wing and looked completely at home. A natural in so many positions, he immediately got to work, delivering some fantastic crosses while also making excellent tackles to win the ball back high up the pitch.
After a couple of poor challenges from Cheriton, we were awarded a free-kick in a dangerous position. Unfortunately, it came at the expense of Henry, who was desperate for a breather after another huge effort.
Jack rotated into centre-back, while Josh returned to the right wing, and the team continued to battle.
There was another worrying moment when Louie was involved in a collision while going for the ball. He was clearly hurt but, as he always does, he soldiered on. He remained as solid as ever in goal and never looked like conceding.
As the game entered its final stages, the whole team continued to fight. We pushed forward when we had the opportunity and defended together when we needed to. Every player contributed, every player worked hard and, most importantly, everyone stuck to the principles and tactics we had discussed before the game.
Then came the final whistle.
Churchill 0–0 Cheriton Primary.
A hard-fought point, but one that was thoroughly deserved.
Against a side that beat us 6–1 last year, the boys showed just how far they have come. This wasn't an easy game, but they stood up to the challenge, worked together and made sure Cheriton had to fight for every single moment.
I am extremely proud of the way the team played. They followed our key principles, implemented the tactics we had discussed and showed fantastic determination from the first whistle to the last.
A clean sheet, a point and a performance full of hard work, discipline and belief.
What a performance from the boys. I can't wait to see what else this team can achieve.
Finally, a huge thank you to all of the parents and the wider Churchill community who came out in such great numbers to support the team. Your encouragement from the sidelines was greatly appreciated by all of us, and especially by the boys on the pitch.
