Match Report: The Churchill School vs St Mary's
Final Score: The Churchill School 6–1 St Mary’s
The sun shone brightly over Three Hills as May brought the heat, setting the scene for what promised to be an exciting and tightly contested quarter-final. Having played at the ground on several occasions before, the lads were familiar with the surroundings and arrived ready for the challenge ahead.
The game began at a fast pace, and it did not take long for Churchill to make the breakthrough. After just a few minutes, Hudson collected the ball in goal and delivered a brilliant long ball over the top of the entire St Mary’s team to Finley, who was running in behind. Finley brought it down superbly and calmly slotted it home to make it 1–0. Our captain led from the front once again, continuing to show the goalscoring instinct he has displayed throughout the tournament. You would never believe his a goalkeeper by trade. Hudson, meanwhile, was not only a brick wall in goal, making save after save, but also played a huge part in launching attacks with his excellent distribution.
Ellis pushed the team forward throughout, driving play and firing balls across the box, always looking for someone to finish. The passing was sharp and consistent, with Finley being played through the middle on several occasions by accurate through balls. One of those moves saw Josh burst into the box before shifting the ball onto his left foot and being brought down by the defender’s trailing leg. The referee pointed straight to the penalty spot, and up stepped Ronnie, who remained calm under pressure and fired his penalty down the middle to make it 2–0. There was a huge cheer from both the players and the families watching on, a moment of real relief and confidence for the team.
At the back, Leon, Harry and Leo stayed composed, playing the ball into midfield and preventing St Mary’s from building any momentum. They dealt well with numerous high balls and kept the team organised under pressure. Churchill also forced several corners, which piled further pressure onto the St Mary’s defence. In one scrappy sequence, after a number of blocked shots and desperate clearances, a long-range effort fell to Josh, who reacted quickest and smashed it home to add another to his Herald Cup tally.
Churchill remained on top as the half began to draw to a close, and it felt like one more goal before half-time would give them complete control of the tie. Austin provided exactly that, finding space in the box at a tight angle and slotting the ball into the bottom corner. It was another perfectly timed finish. The whistle soon followed, and the boys headed in for some well-earned water and a quick chat before getting back out for the second half.
The team continued where they had left off, showing the same high intensity, pressing high and chasing everything down. A few half-chances came and went, including some efforts from distance that just lacked a little bit of bend to nestle in the net. As the game wore on, a few players were taken off as a precaution, with possible upcoming fixtures in mind. The reshuffle meant players were asked to adapt to new positions, but no one complained - they simply got their heads down and carried out the job asked of them. A proper team effort.
Freddie and Toby linked up excellently in midfield, consistently finding each other and threading balls through to Leon, who found himself up front. Freddie also came close with a number of strikes from range before eventually finding himself in the box and slotting the ball into the corner. Leo battled brilliantly against a strong and physical winger, never backing down and defending superbly throughout.
St Mary’s did manage to pull one back after a corner broke down and they broke quickly down the side before finishing cleverly into the box. It was a reminder that the boys had been outstanding defensively all game, and they deserved much more than to concede, with Leon, Jacob, Harry and Leo all putting in excellent shifts at the back. Jacob, played some vital balls down the line to spark multiple attacks and keep Churchill moving forward.
With just a minute left to play, Leon received the ball on the left side of the box at a tight angle and struck it cleanly into the net to make it 6–1, rounding off a superb team performance in style.
When the final whistle blew, a huge cheer erupted as Churchill booked their place in the semi-final. The lads fully deserved the win after the hard work, determination and togetherness they have shown not only today, but throughout the tournament. They should be incredibly proud of themselves as they now look ahead to the next challenge with great excitement. With the question echoing through the school corridors of, “They couldn’t... could they?” - Who knows what might be next!
